September arrives and with it the return to school, to routine, to extracurricular activities and to the psychologist. It is also the month of the grants intended for boys and girls with learning disorders who require treatment and support during almost all of their schooling.
Well, this year the grants have arrived with a sad surprise: DYSLEXIA and other language and reading-writing disorders are left out. Incredible, isn't it?
The real cost of dyslexia treatment
Children with this type of problem need psychopedagogical support throughout their entire schooling; without it, they will hardly be able to get through primary school, let alone aspire to higher education. These treatments entail an approximate economic cost of around 1000€ per year, which not all families can bear.
The new regulation and equality of opportunity
With this new regulation the State is going to save a great deal of money, because very few will meet the demanding requirements they have set. With this new regulation they have condemned millions of Spanish boys and girls to school failure. Where does equality of opportunity stand? Once again, people with fewer economic resources find themselves at a disadvantage, because if they cannot pay for this treatment their children will not be able to aspire to higher education and will barely pass primary school.
Dyslexia treatment is a new luxury in our country, and meanwhile our politicians keep fighting over who occupies the throne. Ladies and gentlemen, fathers and mothers, teachers, psychologists, how long are we going to keep putting up with these injustices?
The reality we live at our Center
I feel powerless and I feel outraged when I see the number of boys and girls who came to our Center last year thanks to these grants and how they improved their studies and their abilities. Now they will no longer come and furthermore they will not receive that help in their public schools, because with the scarce resources they have for special educational needs, they will not be able to provide it.
This week I have not been able to write a post, because the only thing I feel like talking about is the grants. Now I have to see the look of disappointment on those parents' faces when I give them the news and watch how this year they can no longer bring their children.
Who can apply for the grants under the new resolution
The Ministry of Education and Culture begins the resolution of July 27, 2016, in which it calls for aid for students with a specific need for educational support, in the following manner:
“las becas y ayudas al estudio constituyen uno de los instrumentos que contribuyen de forma más eficaz a hacer posible el principio de igualdad de oportunidades”
And after this sentence comes the big cut; the only boys and girls who will be able to obtain a grant are:
- ADHD with severe conduct disorder accredited by a CSMIJ or pediatrician
- Intellectual disability with a disability certificate from the CAD
- Severe conduct disorder with a disability certificate
- High intellectual abilities (the only one that does not require CAD and for which the same documentation as in previous years is required)
