## Why reading is important for children

We know that instilling in children **a love of reading** is one of the most precious gifts we can offer them. **Reading improves children's emotional and psychological development**, enhancing their imagination and creativity, as well as helping them express emotions in a playful way. In addition, it has been proven that reading helps improve children's capacity for linguistic progress.
According to research, when we read we force our brain to think, to organize ideas, to interrelate concepts, to exercise memory and, above all, to imagine, which allows us to enhance our intellectual capacity since when we read there is an increase in the connection of neurons. And, finally, it also allows us to generate topics of conversation, which helps us interact better with others and know how to better manage conflicts.
More and more parents are worried because their child is not motivated to read. Some say they do not understand it because they have always been readers, or others say that they have a library at home with a lot of books; but even so, many children are reluctant to read. For this reason, we are going to give you some keys to motivate them so that they naturally become interested in the world of books.

## Keys to motivate your child to read

**Create a home of readers**: Children are models of their parents, and parents are the role models for their children. So to motivate them to read, first they have to see that you do it too. Watch video:

- Every time you read something interesting, tell them how appealing it was for you so that they see your positive emotion about what you have read. It does not matter whether it is a book, an article,…
- **Read together**. When you read a text, you can take turns and each read a page. They will feel many emotions and it will be an experience to bring you closer together.

- **Respect their pace**. Each person has their own pace for reading. Do not pressure them if you see that they read very slowly or incorrectly, and motivate them when they make the slightest improvement. Positive reinforcement motivates them to try again.

- **Make up a book with them**. You can use many things: Cut out images from magazines, write the letters in different colors, make up stories alternating drawings and words. With all this you will help enhance their imagination and creativity, shaping them to be more thinking beings.![children reading a book](/images/blog/2015/11/ninos-leyendo.webp)

- **Encourage visiting libraries and bookstores**. It is a good plan for an outing, especially on cold or rainy days. Let them be the ones to search, explore, and look at whatever they feel like. Stay for a reasonable amount of time so that they can browse at their own pace.

- **Take advantage of technology**. We know that, more and more, children are increasingly drawn to new technologies. Offer them an e-book reader with an interesting selection of titles that seem appealing to them.

- **Create a cozy reading spot in your home**. Find a place where they can relax with books. Look for it together so that they can also choose where they feel most comfortable for reading.

- **Take part in library activities**. There are interesting activities offered by libraries or even bookstores. Find out regularly what services they offer and thus have a range of opportunities so that the child can be drawn to reading spontaneously and not forced.
